Workers Linked Together is a nonprofit organization founded in 2016 by Labor Activist and Advocate Marianna M. Battiste, a Healthcare Worker at University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. Ms. Battiste has been representing her Coworkers for over 36 years. Ms. Battiste was shop-steward as a member of UFCW Local 8 at Raley’s Freeport store for 26 ½ years until her retirement in 2014. Ms. Battiste became Steward in the department of Radiology at UC Davis Medical Center in 2010, which was followed by the opportunity to be elected as Trustee of the first Executive Board for Teamsters Local 2010. Ms. Battiste was appointed to the political committee. She was successful in passing the first anti bullying law in the State of California AB 2053 holding management accountable for their misconduct of treatment and harassment in the workplace, while also playing a huge role in helping and organizing unrepresented workers.

While Ms. Battiste founded the organization, she and the team members of “Workers Linked Together” have witnessed and experienced many, represented and unrepresented workers, who need help with representation, and help with toxic environments in the workplace. Some of the main concerns and reasons for forming the non-profit are as follows and resulted in workers seeking help elsewhere.

The reasons given were that:

Not an immediate priority for the Local resulting in delay of response and representation.

Not able to generate positive outcomes for members in crisis with workplace management abuse in some cases resulting in misrepresentation and wrongful discipline to employees.

Unknown random reason for inaction of representation leading to Leadership operations run rather than member ran Leadership operations, which creates the façade the leadership works for the members, when all reality operations and treatment of the memberships by Local Leadership actions are such as members work for the leadership.

No Transparency or Accountability for members from Local Leadership.

A huge need for workers in need of representation from toxic work environments fostered by management and upper management also in most cases abusive treatment and behaviors of upper management accepted by Labor Relations Department.
